Before You Come

We want to do our best to prepare you so you can relax, be comfortable, and have a great time when you visit River City Community Church. We are much more than just a building, a location, or a place on a map. We are a vibrant community of people who love God and love God’s people. We invite you to learn more about us, and it is our prayer that we could become an access point for you to connect to God on a deeper level, to build great relationships with other people, and to participate in the mission of God by contributing your gifts and talents.

Getting Connected

We want every person that is part of River City Community Church to be vitally connected in community. We want to facilitate your journey to get involved both in new relationships as well as in ministry opportunities that utilize your gifts and strengths while advancing the kingdom of God. Here you will find an array of opportunities for next steps in your journey.

About Us

God has led River City Community Church on amazing journey, and we know the story has just started. We invite you to hear some of that story up to this point, to learn more about our vision and values, and to take a peek into the heartbeat of our community. And then we hope and pray that you too will become part of the unfolding story!

“I’m Puerto Rican” – an exploration of cultural identity development, by Ivan Gonzalez (elder at River City)

Hi friends, I’m Puerto Rican.   That means as I’ve traced my lineage that I’m a mix of multiple streams of culture and ethnicity.  Bill Smiljanic referred us to an article on Google groups that states there are lots of ways to maneuver with our identities in our society. At times, I’ve felt like a chameleon.  It’s interesting how Wikipedia defines the ability of [...]

The Lies of Lent

This Sunday, March 3rd, we will launch a new 3 week series entitled “The Lies of Lent.” As many of you know, Lent is the span of time in the church calendar that starts with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday commemorates the beginning of Jesus’ 40-day fasting and temptation in the desert, [...]

A Reflection on Black History month, by Brandon Green

Black History month is upon us and generally I approach this month with a heavy heart. Knowing I will inevitably have to revisit the ancient fraternal twins of our history- the barbaric and dehumanizing atrocities perpetrated by my native land, paired with the heroic and victorious perseverance of my people. Every year in February [...]

Reflections on La Posada

La_Posada_students_singing

After a long day of ESL graduation and preparation for La Posada, I arrived late to headquarters, stressed and worried, only to realize I’d forgotten the necessary chord for my slideshow. As Jon and I sped through a conversation regarding who would teach the traditional peregrinos song in the absence of a music leader, we decided he’d teach both groups while I frantically rushed home. Running [...]

Cameron-Elementary-School-Cynthia-Perry

If you attend River City, you’ve probably heard Daniel talk about the needs of west Humboldt Park and our church’s desire to partner with Cameron Elementary School. I love the vision the church has for west Humboldt Park, specifically for Cameron, so I met with Ann Healing to find ways to get involved. One month [...]

River City is moving… at least for a little while!

Salem-Church---Chicago-IL

River City Community Church had a great run at the New Life Church building at 1665 N Mozart.  It’s hard to believe we were there for over 6 years! As Ivan Gonzalez, one of the River City elders, prayed over the transition on our last Sunday there, he used it as a time to remember [...]

The Pursuit of Greatness

Safe or Brave?

And here is one choice that our Father wants us to understand as Christians – and I believe this is the choice of our age: Do we want to be brave or safe?  Gently, lovingly, our heavenly Father wants us to know that we simply can’t be both.” –Gary Haugen, Founder of International Justice Mission, [...]

Celebrate Dr. King

MLK-praying (1)

It was January 27, 1956. Dr. King was in his home, wrestling with God. He was experiencing what some of the old mystics used to call the “dark night of the soul.” It was only 13 months earlier – in December 1955, that Rosa Parks was arrested in Alabama for refusing to give up her seat [...]

People Going Ballistic

A quick thought from some devotional reading this morning: I was studying the passage where Jesus sends the 72 disciples out onto their first mission. “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The [...]
